The Lovers

2015-2016

“The Lovers” consists of four hand woven carpets based on four sketches in which a couple is caressing and swirling at the same time, while the moon rises and the scene becomes dark and abstract.

The style and palette echoes Russian decorative painting as well as the costumes designed by Natalia Goncharova for the Ballet Russe. After the sketches were created, the artist send them to four different Latvian textile artists, who woven the carpets in accordance and yet letting their own personal style emerge. For this reason each carpet is rendered in a different style.

The project was commissioned to the artist by kim? Contemporary Art Centre for the exhibition “Tri Devizi Pod Oknom” [three girls under the window], which is the first line The tale on Tsar Saltan by Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin.
